Clay Docent Workshop #2 - Oct 8th

Time is quickly approaching.  Our 2nd Clay Docent Workshop is on Oct 8th (Monday) from 8-11:30am in the Science Lab.  We will be going over glazing techniques.

If you attended our first workshop on Sept 17th, your pieces will be ready for you to glaze.  If you were unable to complete all your projects, you will still be able to work on those projects at this workshop and your pieces will be ready to glaze at the 3rd workshop on Nov 5th.

If you were unable to attend our first workshop, you will still be able to work on your grade level projects at this workshop.  We will go over the 3 clay techniques with you after we have gone over the glazing techniques.

Also if you are unable to attend this workshop, our 3rd workshop will be held on Nov 5th (Monday) from 8-11:30am.  The 3rd workshop will be our final workshop for the school year.

The Clay Docent Workshops are on a drop-in basis.  From 8:30 - 9:30 am, there will be a demonstration of the glazing techniques and clean-up.  If you cannot be there for the glazing technique demonstration, you can ask one of the Clay Docent Committee Members for a demonstration any time during the Workshop.

For a list of the grade level projects, select your child's grade level under the "Grade Level Projects" heading on the right-hand side bar.

Questions?  Contact the Clay Docent Committee at BHClayDocent@yahoo.com.

Hope to see you on the 8th!

Save the Date - Workshop Schedule

The Clay Docent Workshops have been scheduled for the following dates:
  • Sept. 17, 2012 (Mon)
  • Oct. 8, 2012 (Mon)
  • Nov. 5, 2012 (Mon)
All workshops will be held from 8-11:30am in the Science Lab.  Attendance at all three workshops is not required.

For those new to the program, the Clay Docent Workshops are on a drop-in basis.  From 8:30-9:30am, there will be a demonstration of the 3 clay techniques (slab, pinch and coil)  that will be used for the 3 grade level projects.  If you cannot be there for the clay technique demonstration, you can ask one of the Clay Docent Committee Members for a demonstration any time during the Workshop.

With everyone's busy schedules, we understand that you may not be able to attend all three workshops.  Therefore, we recommend that you try to make all three of your grade level projects at your first workshop.  Then at the next workshop, if you were not able to complete all of the projects you can then do so.

For a list of the grade-level projects, please click on the "Projects" tab in the menu bar or on the grade level link under "Grade Level Projects" in the right-hand column.  Grade level projects are subject to change.  We are still finalizing all projects for this year.

If you have any questions, please contact the Clay Docent Committee at BHClayDocent@yahoo.com.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back!  We hope you had a fun filled summer and are ready to sculpt some clay.  We are.

First I would like to welcome Fritzie Sampani to the Clay Docent Committee.  We are excited to have her join us.

Also we would like to say "Good Luck" to our long time Clay Docent co-Chair, Hedieh Yaghmai-Steele.  Hedieh has moved to another school district.  We've enjoyed working with her and will miss her greatly.

So now back to business.  We will be hosting 3 Open House Workshops where you will be trained on the 3 sculpting techniques (slab, pinch and coil) along with a few glazing techniques.  We have yet to set the dates of the workshops, so please check back.  As soon as we schedule the workshops, we will post them here and in the weekly school bulletin.

If you have any questions, please email us at BHClayDocent@yahoo.com.

Thank You!

Clay Clean-up
Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped in the classrooms throughout the school year.  Without you the Clay Docent Program would not be a success.

A big "Thank You" to the parent volunteers who came on Monday, May 21st, and helped with the end of year clean-up.  I think we got everything done in record time.  The Clay Docent Committee really appreciates all your help.

Just a reminder, if you made pieces in any of our workshops and have not picked them up yet, you can still pick them up in the kiln room.

Clay Clean-up Rescheduled

We've had a change in plans.  The Science Lab is no longer available on Monday, May 14, due to STAR testing make-ups.  So we've had to move the clay clean-up to the following Monday, May 21, from 8-11:30am.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to folks who have graciously agreed to help us on the 14th.  We are now in search of 8 people to help us on the 21st of May.  If you are available (even for an hour :-) we are hoping you can join us.

May 14th - Save The Date

All the classes have completed the sculpting portion of their last project.  So that can only mean one thing - "Time to clean-up all the Clay Docent supplies and take inventory".

When: May 14, 2012
Time: 8-11:30am
Where: Science Lab

Even if you only have one hour to lend a hand, we would appreciate if you could come and help us.  The Clay Docent Program would not be successful without you.

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to school.  Classes have already had their clay docent lessons since we returned from the Winter Break.

Just a couple of reminders:

  • If your class is sculpting a pinch or coil project, remember to condition the clay at least one day before the lesson.
  • If a child is absent the day of the lesson, please make arrangements with the teacher for the student to make up the lesson.
  • Please put sample pieces back in their designated bin.

The kiln is up and running again.
